.MOBI Domain Names
More and more people use mobile devices to access the Internet, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is steadily growing. To fulfill this demand, the entity that operates the generic TLDs, ICANN, launched the .MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it have to comply with specific terms. In other words, all .MOBI websites need to be designed to be opened faultlessly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These have to do with how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.
The rules have provoked some worries as the generic TLD is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to open a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be designed in such a way as to be opened by most web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
Considering that the .MOBI Registry does not offer domains directly, you can grab a dot MOBI domain with any third-party provider, such as ours. If you have an already registered domain, you can also transfer it to our firm if you obtain its EPP transfer code from your present registrar. If you do that, you’ll be able to administer your domain(s) and hosting account from one place – our Hepsia Control Panel tool.
